The Dork Knot was the ponytail that fastened the short-cropped plume of hair on the quasi-mullet hairstyle that was popular with artsy graphic designers back in the late 1980's. Using a ponytail to fasten back about 30 strands of short-cropped hair seemed utterly useless, and looked stupid. The trend was popular for about 10 minutes. The men who wore dork knots were usually arrogant dork types.
