It means "mother of liberation" from Tibetan སྒྲོལ (sgrol) meaning "to cross, to traverse, to pass" combined with མ (ma) meaning "mother", metaphorically meaning "a spiritual crossing to the other side of existence (enlightenment)". Dolma is also the Tibetan name for a female Bodhisattva (one who is able to reach enlightenment but delays it to help others) and female Buddha, goddess TARA in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.
