/ˈôˌtizəm/ Noun. Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder which inhibits mental difficulties of social and communication skills. Autism covers a broad spectrum of different kinds of disorders, including ADHD ADD and Asperger's Syndrome . Autism is not a disease, but it can be passed on to future generations genetically. Note: A common misconception about Autism is when people automatically affiliate it with things such as mental retardation or Down Syndrome, in which no they are not the same kind of disorder. Unrelated note: A lot of people in this community apparently want to constantly remind you that autism is not an insult. Any word or term used to mildy or aggressively offend someone is an insult. Take this from a person who has high-functioning Asperger's. And I don't want to be rude but bringing your own personal life into the meaning of a definition is generally a wrong-doing of giving information, nobody came here to hear about yourself, sorry.
