An atypical opioid, commonly used to treat opioid-use disorders. Buprenorphine can reduce or relieve opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings, while having a notably less euphoria and a higher safety profile than other opioids. Buprenorphine is most commonly prescribed as a combination drug with naloxone, to discourage intravenous use (brand name Suboxone) and is sometimes used to treat chronic pain.
