He nods at it. “Open it.” I open the locket. Inside is a black and white polaroid of me, smiling, ice-cream smeared all over my face. That picture was from before we started dating, taken almost three years ago. Before everything with Emilia. I can see the faint etching of pen ink on the image, so I turn the polaroid over. On the back of my picture, there’s one word, written in Jacob’s scrawly handwriting: Prom? I look back up at him, and I cannot contain my excitement. I throw my arms around his neck, and place my lips on his. “Jakey, of course! A million times yes!” His face lights up, and he takes me by my other hand and pulls me into my house.
