Stoma is mouth in latin. Ostomy is a surgical procedure where the surgeon makes an opening to connect some organ with the outside of the body. Tracheostomy is when that opening is made in the trachea for breathing and Colostomy is when the colon is connected to the outside for foecal excretion (in diseases that require that procedure). The opening is usually connected to a sterile bag that will receive the foeces.
