Gill is a surname found in the Sardar Jatt community. The Gill Jatt clan is found in the Punjab regions straddling eastern Pakistan and northwestern India, mainly Lahore in Pakistan and Majha and Malwa in Punjab. It is one of the largest and most aristocratic (upper-class, noble) of the Jatt clans. Many Gill's have been known to hold the highest positions in government and come from wealthy backgrounds. Gill derives from "Gil" which means prosperity, or moisture/richness. Historically they were renowned for their courage, honesty, and bravery. Another source states; Gills are a very fair skinned & tall clan. From their Kashmiri looks one can think that they are from Kargil region of Kashmir who moved to Punjab plains many centuries ago. They may have changed their clan name to Gill (Gil) and Shergill centuries after moving from Kargil in Kashmir. Gill is also the father of the last name Sher Gil (Shergill).
