In text-based roleplaying, a switchtalker is a player who puts their character's speech in quotes, when the norm in such settings is to put emotes between asterisks or other delimiting punctuation and assume that anything else is speech. In some communities, the reverse might be true. In general it's a lot clearer and less confusing if everyone's characters emote and talk in a consistent way. While it isn't usually subject to enforcement, some players may refuse to play with switchtalkers.
