Taken from "Hoisted by his own petard" (Petard is some 16th century shaped charge for breaking into fortresses. If the bomb goes off while the French guy is installing it on the wall, he is then hoisted by his own petard). So when you or someone has plans or an occupation or way of doing things that blows up in their face or defeats their own purposes, they are then, petarded.
