A man made concept, analogy or unit, that explains something that truly doesn't exist. For instance, energy is not a real thing, but a concept that humans have created in order to create physical laws about energetic processes. Another example would be the number 0, which is not real (as it is nothing) yet we use it in mathematics to aid calculation.
