Robert Pershing Wadlow (born Feb. 22, 1918 in Alton, Illinois; died Jul 15, 1940 in Manistee, Michigan) was the tallest person in history. Months before his death, he was measured at a height of 8' 11.1". His extraordinary growth began in infancy and was caused by an overactive pituitary gland. Those who knew him personally remembered him fondly, although he was seen as a curious spectacle by the masses. Sadly, he died of an infection caused by a faulty brace on his left foot. He was 22 years-old. He was also known as the "Alton Giant" and the "Giant of Illinois. " he is also thought of as a "gentle giant."
