Capsule Communicator, a hold over from the days of the Mercury Program of the US Space Program. The German scientists designing the Mercury Capsule always referred to The Capsule, while the Mercury Seven astronauts always called it a Spacecraft. In the Mission Control room, however, the Germans held sway, and all communications went through the astronaut on the ground who was the only radio contact with the astronaut in the spacecraft. The title of the ground astronaut on the console with the "Push to Talk" button was the "Capsule Communicator", abbreviated to "CapCom".
