Schoolies as a term was first used in 1974. Until then it had been a loose gathering of Private School graduates. In 1974, on Hedges Avenue a meeting of Secondary School graduates convened to organise a schedule of events for the week. These events were held at private homes plus some were held at the Old Broadbeach Hotel beer garden. The term Schoolies was used on all flyers that promoted the events.
